Here we have a beautiful 0riginal 1960s hand knit cowichan cardigan 100% hand made right down to the wool being hand spun and colours being natural wool colours with cool oval 60s lightning zip!
Authentic cowichan sweaters are created by Canadas west coast Salish natives in British Colombia's Cowichan valley on Vancouver island.
These men & women have been knitting them for over 150 years, they raise the sheep, shear them & gently wash the wool so not all the oils are removed, which leaves the garment rain resistant. The fleece is not dyed, it’s used in its natural shades of brown, black & white.
The wool is carefully carded to prevent fibre damage & then hand spun.
The sweaters are hand knitted with this pure undyed virgin wool.
A variety of geometric patterns animals, birds, fish or whale images are used to creat each one.
Each sweater represents 100’s of hours of painstaking labour, no two sweaters are alike!
This is a vintage example & is in good condition with no damage
